Overwatch 2 Story Predictions

This is a compilation of our old story predictions for Overwatch 2, back before PvE was basically canceled forever. It's safe to say that most of these are never going to come true now, but a lot of them are still pretty funny, and a good number of them were fairly plausible at the time of writing.

Probability highlights were kept intact from the original document, circa May 2021. We've also since marked which predictions came true, which were proven false, and which are our personal favorites.

  1. The story straight up sucks
    • plotholes, weird/bad story beats
    • inconsistencies/retcons
    • mischaracterization
  2. Major character death
    • Hanzo dies (is redeemed)
    • Widowmaker dies (is redeemed)
    • Widowmaker dies (is not redeemed)
    • Reinhardt dies (heroic, Brigitte revenge plot)
    • Reaper dies (is not redeemed)
    • Ana, Soldier, & Reaper die together
      (or Soldier & Reaper die, Ana is fine)
  3. Minor character death
    • Moira dies
      (technically a major character, but gets dismissed then killed off)
  4. Sombra is extremely important
    • Sombra is the main villain
      • goal does appear to be world domination
    • Sombra is a secret good guy (possibly best supported)
      1. Symmetra Vishkar interaction
      2. calls Zarya a traitor
      3. pays everyone's rent in karaoke interaction on Busan
    • Sombra "pulls a Vriska"
      • (her plans go so spectacularly wrong that it controls the entire story)
  5. Sombra is a leftist (most likely negative)
    • supported by aforementioned Busan lines
    • more likely if she is a villain; Blizzard hates leftists
  6. Sombra hacks the Omnic characters
    • Echo
    • Bastion
    • Zenyatta
    • Orisa
  7. Ashe and the Junkers team up
    • They get along
      1. Ashe & Junkrat are insane and like explosions
      2. BOB & Roadhog are big and quiet
      3. and all of them like money
    • They DON'T get along
      1. Junkers hate Omnics; dislike BOB (and a lot of Deadlock?)
      2. Ashe's personality
      3. and all of them like money
  8. Wrecking ball is phased out of the story entirely
  9. Gency becomes canon
  10. Meiston becomes canon
    • is just heavily implied, most people ignore it
    • explicitly made canon to take heat off a major controversy using the outrage
  11. Cassidy is actually Reaper's son
    • dev stream "he's white" reveal could be red herring, lie, or get retconned
    • the timelines don't match up on this one but that's never stopped them before
  12. Cassidy lost his arm to Reaper
    • Star War
  13. Efi disappears from the story entirely
  14. Efi becomes a real character
  15. Moira is never fully utilized
    • she only exists as an explanation for Reaper's survival; fills "evil Mercy" niche
